6 Tips for Networking Online
Recently, I had a Zoom meeting with someone new, introduced through a mutual friend. We hit it off, and it reminded me how valuable online networking has become. As life returns to in-person meetups, I’m excited for coffee dates again—but I also love the convenience of virtual networking. It’s a lifesaver for a mom like me, who often lives in joggers and messy buns!
However, many people still feel nervous about virtual networking. Just like in-person events, it takes practice and preparation. To help you feel more confident, I’m sharing my top six tips for making meaningful connections online.
1. Be Present and Engaged
It’s easy to be distracted during a virtual event, but being fully present is critical. Mute your phone, close unnecessary tabs, and dedicate the time to participate. Just like at an in-person event, people notice when you’re tuned in—and they’ll remember you for it. Fully engaging helps you stand out and build stronger relationships.
2. Craft a Memorable Elevator Pitch
Your elevator pitch is how you introduce yourself, your business or job, and your goals. Keep it short and authentic—don’t be overly salesy. One of the perks of virtual networking? You can have your pitch written down to refer to if needed. Practice, tweak, and ask for feedback until it feels natural.
3. Use the Chat Box Effectively
Don’t stay silent during an online event. Use the chat box to participate by answering questions, sharing thoughts, and even dropping your introduction. Many events allow you to share links to your website or social profiles, so take advantage of these opportunities to showcase who you are. This will help others get to know you beyond the screen.
4. Build Connections After the Event
Networking doesn’t end when the event does. Make it a goal to connect with 1-2 people afterward. Send private messages during the event or jot down names and emails shared in the chat. Then, follow up immediately with a friendly email or invitation to a virtual coffee chat. Consistency in follow-ups makes all the difference.
5. Be Consistent with Your Attendance
Showing up to a networking event once won’t cut it. Attend regularly so people begin to recognize you. Consistency builds trust and increases the likelihood that others will reach out or send referrals your way. Block off recurring dates on your calendar to make networking a priority.
6. Make Introductions for Others
One of the most powerful things you can do is connect people. If you meet someone who could benefit from knowing a contact of yours, introduce them. Not only does this foster community, but it also helps solidify your role as a valuable connector. People will remember and appreciate your generosity.
Online networking has transformed how we connect, offering both convenience and opportunity. With these tips, you can build meaningful relationships and grow your network—without ever leaving your home. Whether virtual or in-person, networking is all about connection, consistency, and community.
